This is a collection of the first remixes I did when I first started making beats. I always wanted to be a producer and creating remixes is the closest thing I had to it. Click here to download the whole project.

| Ominous 015 - Afu Ra
This is one of my favorite artists. I was lucky enough to come across an acapella of his and I had to try and flip it. I ened up with a couple of different versions because I really wanted to pump something out that was as good as the original but at the time my skills and sound sets were hella limited. I even tryed to use a beat I created on my PSP using the Traxx Pad program. Here is what I came up with... |
||||
| Ominous 014 - Mos Def
Thie mighty Mos Def. One of the most talented brothas to ever grace the mic. Another acapella I was lucky enough to come across. This was from one of my favorite albums, DJ Honda's II, and this song, Travelin' Man was my favorite track. The acapella was the remixed version. I wanted to try a couple of different versions of this track but I got frustrated because I don't know how to make beats to compliment people singing. So I just used the best version I had. |
||||
| Ominous 013 - Rakim
The "R". What can you say about the legend? I hesitated remixing anything by him because you have to come correct when you touch Rakim's stuff. Version A was a beat I did a while back ago and I just put the vocals over it but Version B was from scratch. I liked version A a lot better because I really liked the sample I used which came from Taste of Honey. One of the records my Pops gave me when he forked over his record collection. They have some great music. You should try to get some if you are into old RnB. |
||||
| Ominous 012 - Rakim
I had a hard time with this remix because there is a heavy Bass drop mixed in the with vocals so you are have to deal with that when you remix it. |
||||
| Ominous 011 - Das EFX
Earlier I said Red and Meth were the best rap duo but my favorite rap duo of all time has to be Das Efx. They Want EFX was the first song I ever destroyed. I played that tape until it snapped. Even though I knew Hip Hop was my favorite genre of music as soon as I heard Kool Moe Dee, They Want Efx was the song that locked Hip Hop in my mind. I experimented with 2 versions. Just messing around. Here is the instrumental for one of them. |
||||
| Ominous 010 - Mos Def
Like I say in the video, this was a break I wanted to flip years before I ever actually started producing. I ended up trying out two different flips. I like beats like this where they reference something you might have grown up with that you may have never guessed a beat would be made out of. |
||||
| Ominous 009 - Jeru
Jeru was one of those artists that I wish would have put together a 10 CD portfolio. I think he could have easily gone down as one of the East's top 10 emcees with Primo on his production. Jeru and DJ Honda is a close combo but Ru and Primo are just too lethal. I would love to produce a whole album with Jeru one day but that might be a little too lofty a goal for me at this time. |
||||
| Ominous 008 - Masta Ace
Has Masta Ace had one of the longest and quietest carreers ever in hip hop? Last time I really bought anything by Ace was on tape. Which is a sad confession because you and I both know he has released some great work since then. I am just a little slow these days. Turns out, life gets in the way of one trying to buy everything one wants. As soon as all bills are out of the way, I will continue to add work to my CD collection starting with Masta Ace. |
||||
| Ominous 007 - Roots
I used to fall asleep listening to the Roots. Since they had a live band sound it was easy on the ears. When I turned 16, my boys saw a box of tapes sitting in a music store and stole one for my birthday. They thought it was the Roots but it ended up being some other rap group that was wack as hell. The point of the story... don't steal. It's not worth it. Anyway, the sample used for this song was what I would call my first crate find. I listened to a lot of records before I found this break that I knew I wanted to flip as soon as I found it. |
||||
| Ominous 006 - Missy
I was working at the Wherehouse Music store when this song came out on maxi-single. So it had the instrumental and the acapellas. So this was clean and easy but since I was still very used to doing remixes, I did this thing where I doubled the actual BPM of the song in the Reason file. So I ended up with a drum and bass type of track on accident. |
||||
| Ominous 005 - Erick Sermon
This is one of my favorite artists. I was lucky enough to come across an acapella of his and I had to try and flip it. I ened up with a couple of different versions because I really wanted to pump something out that was as good as the original but at the time my skills and sound kits were hella limited. I even tryed to use a beat I created on my PSP using the Traxx Pad program. Here is what I came up with... |
||||
| Ominous 004 - Red and Meth
Arguably the best duo in Hip Hop, I was lucky enough to get this acapella on a CD single. So I had no problem finding and matching the BPM. I ended up with 2 versions for this song because I auditioned a beat I used for another remix to this one and liked the accidental remix. |
||||
| Ominous 003 - Mobb Deep
This was before I realized that I should just keep variations or a beat or remix in the same folder as the original instead of separately. This was early on before I adopted that as a steady practice. Since I did not have a bunch of acapellas at the time, I decided to just make another variation of this song. |
||||
| Ominous 002 - Mobb Deep
There is probably an unwritten rule somewhere that says you don't remix tracks by Havoc. These are two reasons why. You can't improve perfection. But I am trying to learn from the best so I follow in their foot steps. Havoc is one of the sickest producers out to me because he has a true sampler's style. In other words, he lets the sampe dictate what he will do. I on the other hand tend to do the same thing with different samples. |

Ominous 001 - Jin My very first remix. The one I am the most proud of. Sure, at the time, I didn't know much about producing. I still don't really. But I am light years ahead of where I was when I did this remix. The reason why I am so proud of this remix is because it was intentional. See most of my remixes are experimental. I am just trying different things. But this remix was born before I ever touched a beat machine or computer. The first time I watched Ghost in the Shell and I heard the soundtrack playing in the movie... the first thing I thought was... damn someone should make a beat out of this. And that is what made me start producing. You can't sit around waiting for Primo, Pete Rock or Blockhead to do everything. |

2006.09.02 Producing is something I think I will end up doing for the rest of my life. Whether I make a career out of it or just do it for a hobby, I plan on making some great connections and further develop and unify the culture. Locally and nationally. It's not hard to explain why. I got friends that have become mechanics and spend all their free time restoring old muscle cars and motorcycles. Other friends have taken up golf and dedicate every weekend to perfecting their swing. Some were bit by the technology bug and chase the latest and greatest in computer equipment and gaming platforms. I will have my left hand in all of that as keep my right hand on my MPC with all my other hip hop heads. So with that said, feedback is always welcome and if you notice bad lnks or anything else wrong with the site, send me an email. But as far as all the negative comments and energy, its a waste of you time. I don't plan on quitting. It's like telling someone they suck at video games. I doesn't mean their going to stop playing. They don't play to appease you. And I don't produce things for you to like them. I produce work that I like. And I put it out there for those who enjoy it. So download it and please... support the artists you love. It keeps them around. OMINOUSRED@GMAIL.COM |
